New Ideas Needed For Medical Waste Disposal

In recent years there’s been a huge increase in the amount of medical waste that is generated. This is largely due to the use of more disposables being used as precautionary measures against infectious disease. It can also be attributed to the fact that there are more medical and public health facilities than ever before.

Entrepreneurs are working to make the collection and handling of medical waste more efficient.

One, a Texas based company, recently opened a medical waste destruction facility. It plans to destroy medical waste without using incineration. They claim that their process still destroys all pathogens. The process relies on a thermal destruction system that destroys waste in all three states- solid, liquid and gas. The first chamber in the system converts waste to smoke. A second “plasma” chamber sends the smoke past an ion beam that increases the rate of free radical oxidation. The third and last section holds the remaining smoky output for a time before allowing it to escape into the atmosphere.

Another company, based in South Carolina, received a grant for its disposal system. The system supposedly changes biohazardous medical waste into clean, solid waste. The company uses a selection of different containers to collect the waste.

Disposing of bio-medical waste in a safe way using new technology will continue to be a challenge into the future.
