 The healthcare industry continues to be one of the biggest worldwide. However, because of their continuous operation, high energy consumption, and massive output of medical and healthcare waste, they play a significant role in harming and deteriorating the environment.

The Financial Impact of Effective Medical Waste Management

According to one study, the expenses associated with managing medical waste in landfills and disposing of it properly range from 25 to 30 cents per pound. This is in contrast to the 1.6 to 3 cents per pound that is required for the disposal of unregulated and non-infectious waste—a difference of about 10 to 15 times!

Assume that every day in the United States, 100% of the waste generated is disposed of properly. Around 30% of this waste is generated in medical facilities, and 90% of this waste is "white bag waste," or ordinary waste. Doing the math on this simple waste management project alone comes out to $444,600 a day.

Let us now assume that of this waste, only three-fourths is being disposed of appropriately in white bags, and the remaining portion is being thrown into "red bags". Depending on how well OR staff adhere to proper disposal guidelines, this could result in unnecessary spending for U.S. hospitals of up to $115,303,500 over the course of a year.

Thus, appropriate hospital waste disposal methods can benefit patients by creating a cleaner, more conducive environment that better supports health. Along with saving money for hospitals, it also helps the environment by reducing the amount of waste that is needlessly burned as biohazard waste.
