Medical waste varies depending on the context and type of activity involved. Nevertheless, most medical wastes include items containing human biological material and body parts such as syringes, needles, and patient-care devices.

Hence, the need to properly dispose of medical waste in hospitals. The process of disposing of medical waste in hospitals is a complex one. As the population grows, so does the amount of medical waste that needs to be disposed of.

There are several steps involved in the disposal process, each with its own purpose and importance.

Segregation
The segregation of medical waste is one of the most important steps in this process. This separation is done by using proper containers, bins, and other equipment that are designed for this purpose. First, all sharps such as needles, syringes, or scalpels are removed from their containers and placed into separate bins.

Storage and Transportation
After segregation has been done, the hospital can store the medical waste safely until it is ready for disposal. This might include placing it in sealed containers or bags before transporting them to a designated landfill site or incinerator facility.

Treatment and Disposal
When all information regarding the disposal has been gathered, then it will be treated and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
Medical waste should be treated by incineration or autoclaving. The treatment might be done by using chemical disinfectants on solid wastes like plastic bags or syringes while liquid wastes like urine can be disinfected with chlorine dioxide solution which is known as bleach solution in hospitals.
