Is There a Best Method for Disposing of Hospital Waste?

6 3

Proper disposal of hospital waste isn’t that easy. After all, there are certain guidelines that must be met, and certain practices should be followed to make sure that hospital waste is properly disposed of.

While there are several methods for proper hospital waste disposal, is there one method that we can consider the best of them all? Let’s find out!

The Best Method for Hospital Waste Disposal

The most popular and highly effective means of hospital waste disposal include the following:

  • Incineration – This is an old yet commonly used method that involves burning waste.
  • Disinfection – This one uses chemicals to disinfect hospital waste to prevent contamination and further spread of diseases.
  • Encapsulation – This method uses cubic boxes which are then sealed to secure the hospital waste inside.
  • Autoclaving – Autoclaving uses a thermal disinfection process and involves treating waste in a pressurized condition.
  • Inertization – This method involves the process of mixing hospital waste with various substances such as cement before it’s disposed of.
  • Land disposal – This method uses either an open dump or a sanitary landfill for waste disposal purposes.

As it stands, land disposal is the most common practice used by a lot of hospitals these days. However, it won’t be ideal in the long run since landfills will fill up with them. Some resort to incineration and autoclaving as they can effectively kill microorganisms in a more controlled environment. This means that any potential disease won’t spread to nearby water sources and affect local wildlife.

Both are also effective for dealing with toxic and hazardous wastes. In a sense, we can consider them the current best methods for hospital waste disposal.
