It’s important for healthcare professionals to understand the importance of proper medical waste handling and disposal. Improperly handling this type of hazardous waste can lead to the spread of several diseases.

In a report by the World Health Organization, it stated that medical waste contain pathogens that can be linked to the following illnesses:

Parasitic Infections
Waste contaminated with live parasites is often found in facilities that test patients for parasites. Incubation is used to test the bodily fluids, which are then disposed of as waste once it is complete. It then makes sense why improper disposal of any waste from these type of procedures can prove to be extremely infectious.

Skin Infections
It can be easy to for skin to be infected if it comes in contact with any medical waste pathogens. Thus, it is important for protective gear to be worn when handling hospital waste.

Bacteremia
This an incredibly dangerous infection that moves to organs in the body once bacteria enters the bloodstream. Pathogen can also be found on sharps and other instruments that have not been disposed of early.

Meningitis
Meningitis can be contracted through bodily fluids and causes the brain and spinal cord membranes to cause inflammation and the lost voice.

Candida
This disease is caused by Candida albicans and is now associated with long hospital stays. Usually, it is the waste from hospitals and other clinical treatment facilities that often contains this pathogen and infects whoever comes into contact with it.

Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
Something as small as a needle prick can get you both Hepatitis B and C. It’s important for all sharps to disposed of properly in the right container.

Medical providers should always be devoted to caring for their patients and making sure no harm comes to their fellow healthcare workers. This includes protecting them from coming into contact with any pathogens and other medical hazards.
