How Hospitals Regulate Medical Waste

6 1
Hospitals have strict rules and regulations when it comes to the disposal of medical waste. Since medical waste has the capability of polluting the environment and even spreading deadly viruses, hospitals have been finding ways to dispose of their waste materials safely and in an eco-friendly manner.

Medical waste is usually decontaminated or treated to ensure that the waste product wouldn’t contain any more microbes or deadly viruses. After the decontamination process, the materials are then disposed of or recycled.

There are 3 techniques that hospitals have been using for a long time now, these techniques may include:

•    Autoclaving/Steam-sterilization – This method uses high-pressure steam to sterilize the waste that is suspected to contain pathogens
•    Incineration – This technique involves the use of incinerators. Medical waste will be incinerated so that any microbes will be killed off.
•    Interment - When it comes to anatomical waste such as body parts, fluids, and even corpses, they are either incinerated or rapidly buried to make sure any disease the patient may have won’t have the chance to spread.
With the advancement of your technology, more and more ways to manage medical waste have been discovered. Such advanced methods may not be commercially available at this point but sooner or later they may come to light. These methods may include:
•    Chemical Disinfection – Using chemicals to either sterilize the equipment or to completely vaporize the waste materials.
•    Microwave – This uses the thermal power of microwaves to kill the microbes from the medical waste.

Since hospitals produce a lot of medical waste every year, they have strict rules and regulations to ensure the safety of the people. These are just some of the methods used in managing medical waste and with our technology still improving, more methods will be invented in the future.
