Health Care Waste Management and the Sustainable Development Goals

Imagine a society in which providing medical care does not have to result in endangering the environment or placing medical personnel in danger. This is the bold goal behind integrating healthcare waste management into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Good Health For All

Ensuring everyone's health is a crucial SDG. Healthcare has advanced in areas like life expectancy, but proper disposal of waste is frequently disregarded. Over half of the world's population may be protected if this problem is resolved.

Diseases can be transmitted by contaminated water (SDG 6), a problem that healthcare facilities frequently contribute to by disposing of waste improperly. The World Health Organization encourages waste treatment techniques that prevent additional pollution because it acknowledges this connection.

Healthcare waste management is acknowledged as a crucial service by SDG 8, but employees in this industry frequently deal with low pay and unsanitary working conditions. It would be right to treat healthcare waste management like other essential services.

Sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12) represents an additional domain in which healthcare can effectively contribute. By using their purchasing power, hospitals can opt for supplies that produce less waste and are safer to dispose of.

Resources can be preserved by minimizing waste and separating various types of waste at the source. In addition to combating climate change (SDG 13), these methods strengthen healthcare systems' ability to withstand natural disasters.

At the end of the day, everyone wins! We can all look forward to a healthier future and a healthier planet by striving for improved healthcare waste management.
