Difficulty of Disposing of Medical Waste

Despite its difficulty in recycling, medical waste is hardly a biohazard. Recycling some medical materials such as sharps can be challenging. Terracycle, a US firm, launched a recycling program to deal with such medical materials.
TerraCycle utilizes an EPA-approved sterilization technology that helps recycle used sharps from across American hospitals.
The method is commercial steam disinfection that separates the sharps into plastics, glass, and metals.

•    Free and Puncture-Resistant
According to TerraCycle, it has a unique system that protects contamination exposure and helps recover high-efficient materials. TerraCycle, for instance, has sharp containers and shipping cartons that are puncture-resistant featured in varying sizes.
UPS and the US Postal service approve the collection boxes for use at home and commercial purposes. The 1.4-quart container is ideal for home use, while the 28-gallon system is perfect for commercial use.
TerraCycle claims that customers can put sharp items in its prepaid collection boxes. Like with the Zero Waste Box program, they should contact postal services for pick-ups.
•    Only 15% is Hazardous
Farris cited that among the 90% of incinerated materials, only 15% is biologically hazardous, according to WHO.  
As opposed to WHO's opinion that incineration destroys known pathogens, new research shows that the process produces contaminants harmful to the environment. Also, the ash and byproducts produced after the combustion are not easily recyclable.

Incorporating the best medical waste disposal program can reduce environmental harm. Also, the proper medical waste recycling programs make the wastes reusable.
