Frustrations of Dealing with Medical Waste

As someone who’s responsible for the disposal of medical waste at your doctor’s rooms, clinic, laboratory or vet practice, you’ve no doubt found it tedious at times. As you’re aware, there are many regulations in place for handling, storage and disposal of hazardous waste.

When it comes to storage, a lack of space can be a problem. In a busy medical practice, for instance, space can often be in short supply. It can be a problem to safely store sharps and red bags until the hauler comes to pick them up. This can expose patients and staff to the waste when space runs out.

Money can also be wasted when regular garbage gets put into red bags and sharps buckets. Haulers charge by weight or by the number of buckets they take. Any extra that shouldn’t be in there will negatively affect your profits.

There may also be pickup issues when the haulers are not available frequently enough, particularly in remote locations. This can lead to storage and safety issues.

There are fortunately other options for small practices when it comes to dealing with medical waste. You can opt to invest in technology that lets you sterilize the waste at the practice. This eliminates third-party pick up costs and creates a safe, clean environment for your staff and patients.
