Do Hospitals Contribute to A Lot of the World’s Waste?

1 50

While a wide variety of sectors are contributors to the world’s overall waste, and while we are not certain as to what takes the top spot, hospitals do produce a significant amount of waste globally. Here are some facts that you should know about hospital waste in general:

  •
  • 85% of the waste produced from hospitals is general waste while the rest of the 15% is hazardous waste. These are dangerous wastes that can be toxic, radioactive, or infectious.
  • There are 16 billion injections used all over the world every year, and not all of them are disposed of properly.
  • Another way of eliminating waste from hospitals is to burn them. At times though, burning causes harmful effects such as furans, dioxins, and particulate matter that’s harmful to the environment and people.

There are measures made to ensure that the environment and safety of the people are taken into consideration. In this way, we can prevent any adverse environmental and health impact of hospital waste all over the globe. These hazards could include the release of biological hazards and even drug-resistant microorganisms that could potentially harm the general public.

Waste Management – What Could Make it Fail?

Now that we’re aware of the impact of hospital waste, what can we do about it? Sure, there is waste management, but is this enough? The only way we could maintain our waste management protocols and procedures is to ensure that there is adequate training given and that sufficient financial and human resource support is provided.
